Network (1976)

So i finally saw this movie.  it's been a long time coming.  what a great depressing movie.  I'm glad that movies like this were made, because it shows how things went down the shitter.  it's a great movie, well written, well acted, and very prescient into how tv and culture were going.  i assume it seemed way over the top when it first screened, but now it's pretty stinkin close to home.  i would recomend anyone watch this movie.  it is well done, entertaining, and educational.  if you liked the social network, you will like network.

Restrepo (2010)

Garret sugested i check this movie out.  then i saw it was nominated for an oscar so i decided to watch it.  Damn it was good, the film maker hung out with B company for 15 months.  They came into the Korengal valley to make some changes.  It almost seems like a real life paths of glory.  and this point is punctuated by the fact that at the end of the movie they say that in 2010 the U.S. pulled out of the valley.  all those deaths for nothing.  it's tragic.  the part that was the hardest for me to watch was when the bombing happend and all the civilians were hurt.  i think that everyone should watch this movie. it is terrific, honest and fairly unbiased.  i think that it should win the oscar for documentary.

Exit thru the gift shop (2010)

I enjoyed this movie, but i didn't quite get it. I could tell Banksy was talking shit about someone, presumably the art world and the commercialization of what he holds dear.  Basicly it starts out about this guy theiry pronounced Terry.  anyway he films some of his friends doing street art, and wants to meet Banksy because he's the best.  They end up meeting up, and his movie is crap,  Banksy suggests Theiry start making his own art, he does, and it's lame.  then end.  hmmm i didn't love it.  i don't think it will win an oscar.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (2009)

This third installment in the Millenium Trilogy was my favorite.  I didn't really like all the rape in the first one and i thought the second one was kinda boring.  This one was really entertaining.  Annika Hallin was really good as lisbeth's lawyer.  All the cast were pretty good.  The story is tied up neatly and it has a more or less happy ending.   Lisbeth is in the hospital, then she goes to jail and to trial, all the while mikel is trying to help her.  and the bad guys are trying to stop them and eventually try to kill them.  I would recomend watching this if you have seen the other movies.  and if you haven't seen them you might as well.  they aren't great but, theres worse ways to spend some time.

Miracle (2004)

I freaking love this movie.  yeah it's kinda cheesy and you know how it's gonna end, but man Mike Rich can write a sports movie.  and as a hockey fan this is one of only a handful.  Yeah Slapshot is better, and yeah Youngblood is cheesier, and yeah Canada/Russia 72, is a little more fun but this movie is great.  Kurt Russell is great and i think that Patricia Clarkson's fine performance is often overlooked.  It's a shame that Herb Brooks passed away before he could see the finished product i think he would be really happy about it.

Winters Bone (2010)

This movie is about a kid who takes care of her two children and mom. Its a hard life but, they make due. Then the law comes and tells her that her dad is out of jail, and that if he doesn't show to court they will loose the house, because he put it up for bail. So now she has to find him so that they don't loose the house, and any sort of life they had. This is a really good movie. John Hawkes who is my favorite character actor of late. He is really good as Teardrop, and doesn't look out of place in the mountains. Apparently this movie was nominated for lots of Oscars and i can see why it is really well directed, and very good. Lets just say i'll never look at a canoe and a chainsaw the same way. Holy shit the production designer, deserves an oscar! what a great movie.

Toy Story 3 (2010)

So i have seen the other two movies in this franchise, granted when they were in the theater so it had been a while. and i heard that this one was the best one. I don't think it was that much better. It wasn't worse though either and that's saying something. The movie is cute and makes you kinda sad about growing up. especially if you grew up playing with toys. my favorite part was when the girl had a totoro toy that came to life, however he didn't talk i was bummed out about that. over all if you've seen the other ones and you have a couple hours to kill why not check it out. other wise it's not that great, and you should feel free to skip it. The evil bad guy care bear was kinda funny though, big baby was creepy, and so was "not gay, i just like clothes" Ken.

Green Hornet (2010)

Well i was as surprised as anyone that I actually saw this movie. Then i was secondly surprised that it was actually good. The trailers really made it look shitty, and i figured if i ever got around to watching it that it would be thru Netflix or cable or something. But i wound up going to it and IMAX 3-d as well. Well 17.50$ later i was sitting down in my chair grumbling to my girl about how we didn't go see TRON2 in IMAX but we were seeing Green Hornet? Well anyways this movie was fun, fast paced and actually funny. Kato did a great job and as with the old tv show pretty much stole the show. I don't think this surprised anyone. Seth Rogan was good, and Christopher waltz and Bloodnofski was pretty freaking hilarious as was a cameo by James Frano. Green Hornet has some great action, cool cars, (anyone notice that when Rogan and the random chick were making out in all the cars they skipped the Buggati ?) cool motorcycles, cool scary guns ;). Here's my gripe though. i am starting to really understand the 3d backlash. i enjoyed it but i would have enjoyed it just as much w/o 3d and an extra 5 bucks back in my pocket. i didn't think it really added anything to the movie at all. Overall i would give it 3 hot sauce packets. i think i might try doing this again. In reading past one's i have missed it. Next up is winters bone, kings speech, maybe something else.

Dexter (2008)

I am almost thru the second season. This is a good show. i have been enjoying it quite a bit. The writing is good. it's not as good as the wire but it's enjoyable and quite frankly i keep finding myself rooting for Dexter. which is wierd. i would say it's in the top 5% of tv shows going on.

Titan A.E. (2000)

This is one of Don Bluth's last movies and what a shame. I really like alot of Don Bluth's films. Secret of NIHM has a special place in my heart since it was one of the first movies i ever saw. I also had a love affair and facination with Dragons Lair. Seeing it in the arcade back in the day was a revelation. but after that my interest in his subject matter wains. maybe it's the terrible sequels to his movies that studios keep making. mayben not. i dunno. all i know is that i never really watched anything after rock-a-doodle. which was not very good (it's been 15 years since i've seen it last) Titan AE is not a great movie. it is a good movie. it could have been great i feel. Joss Whedon is one of the co-writers that's a good thing. the script just seems sorta half baked. it could have used some more polish. and then this would have been a great movie. i enjoy the action, and the space ships, just the back story kinda sucks and the aliens are all kinda goofy which is too bad. oh and the music. ohh the music is 3 shades of fucking horrible. over all i would give this three stars if you are under 16. and male. or if you enjoy cheesy scifi space opera. me i love it, so i think it's a pretty good movie.

Shadows (1959)

Shadows is John Cassavetes first movie. He made it for very little money. It is a movie about 2 brothers and a sister. they are all black some darker than others. it revolves around their lives. it is a really interesting peak into what it was like living 40 years ago. the movie is totally unscripted, cassavetes came up with what he wanted the movie to be about and what he wanted it to be like then had the actors use their own words to make it happen. much like the current tv show curb your enthusiasm. The jazz score that lilts thru this movie is a great counterpoint to the hard black and white late 50's new york on the screen. over while this movie must have been ground breaking back in the day. it is little more than a drama now. the things that make it worth while are the acting, the background and the way everyone talks. i would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

September (1987)

This movie is really sad.  It is really good, but it is also really sad.  The actors are all really good, Mia Farrow, Denholm Elliot (who i've never seen before but i liked him alot he reminded me of young jack lemmon, sort of), really all six of the actors in this movie were really good and i thought this movie was really brave for WA  i am always impressed when i see a movie and you know that there was no chance of this will be comercially popular.  The audience hears woody allen and thinks oh i sure like that Annie Hall movie, and they get sometning like this, sheesh. Brave.  i wonder if Mia Farrow was going thru some tough times and that's where woody got the ideas or if he and her were talking and she wanted to play a role like that?

over all i would say that you have to be in the right mood to really enjoy this movie if you want something fun  don't see this.

Holy Mountain (1973)

i had heard about this movie while doing some research about Dune. Alejandro Jorodwarsky had the rights for a while to direct the movie, and he had retained HR giger to do the art design, and the crazy dude to that wrote alien to write it. With Salvador Dali to play the emperor. (holy shit that would have been rad) Anyway they were talking about the movies that he'd made as being totally wierd and man is this movie ever that. It starts out and with this guy who wakes up and starts to get a crucifix made in his image, after he destroys them all he eats the face of the original and then ties a bunch of red and blue balloons to it and sends it up to the heavens, then things start to get wierd, he follows a giant fish hook to the top of a building to find an Alchamist (played by AJ) who starts to turn the thief's poop into gold. Then things take a turn to the strange. Wow this movie is wierd and man is it ever good. He does things in this movie that you just can't do these days, it is wierd fucked up and awesome, david lynch wishes he could make movies this awesome.

i suggest that if you rent this watch it with the director commentatory it is amazing and he actually explains what's going on, making it really enjoyable. imagine watching inland empire and having lynch expain what the fuck is going on. oh that's right he can't he just makes things wierd for wierds sake.

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

I liked this movie alot. WA's part in it really spoke to me. His and Mia Farrows relationship struck alittle to close to home, making this a movie i could relate to. The martin Landou part seems to be the inspiration for matchpoint 16 years later, with the relationship and it ending poorly. I really like the relationship he had with his niece, that was nice, and i think that overall even though it was a sad ending it was a really good ending. Alan Alda was really freakin funny, Sam Waterson was really great. The whole thing of the "good" brother having bad things happen to him and the "bad" brother doing bad things and thier being no consequences was an interesting point that i don't really agree with but i liked none the less.

overall i would say that i liked it quite well and is in my top 5 fav. Woody Allen movies.

Soldier (1998)

So justin at work was talking about this band called the replicants and said i should check them out, so i did and i was reading aobut them on wikipedia, which lead of course to blade runner and unexpectedly to this movie, a one of actioner from when i was in highschool. i remember renting this movie with my dad when he had a cabin on mt. hood on ppv. The writer of soldier was also the writer of bladerunner (screen play not source material) and he had set this movie to take place in that same universe. Todd is a replicant, a nova series one, so looking at it like that i thought this movei was totally cool, showing how they train them and all that stuff. but with out that knowledge i thought it was kinda cheesy but mostly ok action movie, kurt russell really does fucking rule,

i would give it 3.5 hot sauce packets. with the possibility of rewatching once a year maybe, every two.

Elvis the movie

oh sweet jesus i finally saw it. John Carpenter directs Kurt Russell as Elvis in Elvis the movie. and man i have wanted to see it for a long time. it's the only carpenter movie i don't own and had never seen. it's not out on dvd and its hard to find on vhs. i thought that kurt did a good job playing elvis. not an enviable job. It wasn't perfect, but it was a lot better than it had any right to be. The co stars were your basic tv movie actors not horrible not great. i mean what do you expect it's a made for tv movie about elvis.

over all i give it 3 out 5 hot sauce packets

would i watch it often if i owned it? nope, but is it cool to watch it? yep.

Everyone Says i Love You (1996)

This movie is really funny. Imagine, really woody allen making a musical. The story would have made a good story anyway but the characters busting out in song is really funny. Edward Norton is funny. Tim Roth is really funny. Woody allen painting himself into the corner with julia roberts. the thought was terrible and really funny.

36th chamber of Shaolin

I had heard amny things about this movie before i was finally able to see it. i saw it the the 2004 Grindhouse festival at the hollywood theater. Gordon liu i knoew to be rad, but i had no idea this movie was so great. I saw this along with the five fingers of death, invicible pole fighter and master of the flying guilitne all in one sitting. This was the real jem though. It has some of the best fighting and the best training sequences ever. the story is above average for a kung fu movie, but seriously that's not hard. Gordon Liu is freaking awesome in this movie and i can't believe it took this long to come out on dvd. Finally i can watch this amazing movie whenever i want. aaaah. Now if only 8 diagram pole fighter would come and on dvd and shoalin vs. wutang.

this a tie with Duel to the Death as my all time favorite kungfu movie.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask (1972)

Holy crap this movie is funny. It's based on a book very loosely, basicly WA took the chapter titles and made his own stories. There are seven shorts. One is where WA is a jester in midevil times, one where WA is italian, The sodomy one with Gene Wilder was freaking hillarious. this is a really good movie.
